One of the more unique jobs in our review of computer careers is health informatics. The Bureau of Labor Statistics refers to this occupation as Medical Records and Health Information Technicians. It primarily focuses on maintaining and organizing medical records for patients, physicians, hospitals and the government. These technicians are essential to keep information moving, maintaining its accuracy and guarding its security.
This is the lowest paying computer career that we reviewed. Low-earning health information technicians earn a scant $22,250 per year while the top 10 percent can earn up to $56,200. The median earning potential is around $34,160 a year. Those looking for a large paycheck in a computer career should look elsewhere.
The opportunity to become an information technician is similarly low. There are only 186,300 nationwide jobs for this profession with another 41,100 projected to be created by 2022. These are not the lowest numbers in our review of the best computer careers, but they are on the low end. However, this vocation has an extremely low unemployment rate of only 3 percent. Additionally, even though they may post lower overall numbers, information technicians are among the fastest growing occupations with a projected 22 percent growth in the next eight years.
Qualifications to enter the health informatics field are simple to attain. It requires a little more than a high school diploma but less than a college education. Certification to become an information technician can be acquired from trade schools and other post secondary institutions. The time and money spent acquiring certification varies state-to-state and institution-to-institution.
The work environment for information technicians is usually a small office with team of technicians. It???s also highly likely that techs will be working for some kind of medical institution like a hospital or an ancillary organization like an insurance company or a government office. Because of the sensitive and regulated nature of medical information, telecommuting, freelance work and other work environments that are individualistic are not available.
Becoming a Medical Records and Health Information Technician is relatively easy since it doesn’t require a degree, simply a certificate. However, it also does not pay very well and there really isn???t a lot of opportunity for advancement.
